In this 20-minute tone poem, Hailstork reflects on thoughts of those facing the gruesome choice of whether to jump from the World Trade Center as it was collapsing on September 11. Raging fire on one side, and on the other, vast space outside a shattered window, hundreds of feet in the air. In the brief time remaining, there might be memories from the dance of life: love, family, and the thoughts of the small child who, later that night, would ask “where is…?” The leap into space is the final dance. As Falling Leav es was commissioned by the Virginia Chamber Players for Debra Cross flute, Beverly Baker viola, and Barbara Chapman harp.
