Published by Jan Powell (A0.1842440).The show was Up in Central Park and the year was 1947 during the golden age of musicals. The show made money but faded away as the years went by. It was composer Sigmund Romberg's last show and he was paired with most underated lyricist in the business, Dorothy Fields, whom Stephen Sondheim praised numerous times as being the best of the best. The score is rather ho-hum as a whole but near the end of the second act is a little gem of a song, April Snow, that deserves more cabaret interest. It's a rather lost piece and probably because there are no arrangements to speak of out there. I heard the song for the first time on a Barbara Cook album with a precious arrangement that is nowhere to be found and doesn't really convey what I believe Romberg had in mind. You can find an archival piece of sheet music for the song that titles the show simply Central Park and you can hear recordings of it with what is presumed the Broadway orchestration. Here is my version of this quirky and lovely song. I hope it gets sung more often now. If you're a cabaret performer give it a try. You'll like it.
