This arrangement is for high school and middle school jazz band. The arangement falls between medium easy to medium.
Conductor notes:
This is an arrangement of the classic Van Heusen song “All the Way” and is not based on a ballad tempo as was the original version in the 1950s. Instead the style is similar to the mid-1970s to early 1990s R&B style often called “Quiet Storm.” To achieve the proper style and attitude for this arrangement I
suggest the students listen to the Anita Baker songs “Sweet Love” (1986) and “Giving You the Best that I Got” (1988). In this style it is important that the rhythm section stay closely to the written parts in order to minimize clutter. As in much R&B, the rhythm section parts interlock with one another, so changing a given part can upset the intended groove. Performing this chart at the correct tempo (82 bpm) is also important so that the
lyric is not rushed, nor is the groove too slow for the intended style.
