From it's original release in 1994, Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has become a Christmas superhit, featured in countless movies, advertising campaigns and TV specials, covered by numerous artists, and reaching No.1 in the pre-Christmas charts in over 30 countries worldwide.
This new arrangement from the pen of Matt Shaw takes all the original sparkle and drive of the original song and expands it for full symphony orchestra, in an arrangement that promises to delight your audiences.
Every section of the orchestra takes the reins at some point for the melody, with flute, piccolo and glockenspiel opening the show with the iconic introduction. The focus passes to the strings, being joined a few bars later by the whole ensemble. The melody in the verse is shared between oboe, optional tenor sax, horns and 1st violins, with trumpets and woodwinds adding to the mix further in. The brass section then take up the lead for the middle 'All the lights are shining...' section, accompanied by thick chords in the strings and winds, followed by the woodwinds for 'And everyone is singing...' section. The final verse is a recapitulation of the opening orchestration, before the famous Christmas chord builds into the final, closing 18 bars, and everything is driven along at a seasonal pace by kit, sleigh bells and optional bass guitar.
This arrangement was originally premiered by the Warrington Youth Orchestra, for their Christmas Concert in December 2024, but this is challenging and engaging enough an arrangement to be featured by adult ensembles and advanced youth orchestras alike.
