It emerged as a form of national opera and, by the late nineteenth century, achieved great popularity through short, light-hearted works depicting scenes of everyday life, particularly in Madrid.
Premiered in 1897, Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente is one of the most celebrated zarzuelas in the repertoire and offers a vivid musical portrait of popular Madrid at the time. Its prelude functions as an overture, immediately introducing the listener to the work’s lively and festive atmosphere.
In this orchestral piece, Federico Chueca displays his remarkable melodic gift and keen sense of rhythm through a bright, colorful orchestration. The prelude anticipates several of the zarzuela’s most characteristic themes and evokes the bustle of Madrid’s popular festivities, filled with energy, humor, and vitality.
Thanks to its immediacy and charm, the prelude is frequently performed in concert settings outside its original theatrical context, and has become one of the most recognizable pages of Spanish music as well as an excellent introduction to the genre of zarzuela.
