This piece, titled “Andean Girl,” was composed with the image of a girl living in the Andes alongside alpacas and other animals.
Though they live in a unique civilization with values and customs different from ours, they experience the same emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure—as we do. That's the image I envisioned.


I once played this song on a street piano in Los Angeles. Every time it modulated, I could hear whistling over my shoulder.And when the performance ended, the audience of four or five had grown into a large circle of people. Then, one after another, they offered their praise.

In my country, Japan, popularity tends to center around well-known, familiar songs. But in America, people showed genuine interest in listening to songs they were hearing for the first time. I was incredibly happy about this, and it made me realize just how musically sophisticated American audiences are.
