    Tovey's Essential Work

The Companion to Beethoven's Sonatas is a greatly expanded version of the introductory essays in the Tovey edition of the complete sonatas (ABRSM), providing bar-by-bar analysis of each sonata. The book is invaluable to Beethoven students and will guide them toward good interpretation and provides useful analysis and approaches to technical challenges. While the mature pianist may ultimately disagree with some of Tovey's analyses in the details, this book is an invaluable reference that, at the very least, will provoke one to greater, in-depth thinking of these remarkable works.
