Bad binding
Really wanted to love this edition, but the books just refuses to lay flat on the stand. Really doesn't matter how good the score is if I can't keep it on the stand and play.

Clean Urtext sweeps away conventions
This Urtext from 2007 follows the sources more exactly than earlier editions. Cooper virtually ignores the predecessor Tovey/Craxton ABRSM edition, in text and fingering. The separate, very detailed and reasoned Commentaries show the Czerny metronome markings, which are often wildly fast. The fingerings are sparse and conventional. Fingerings are absent from Opp. 101 on, on the assumption that professionals would prefer to devise their own. Actually, I found that consulting previous editions, particularly Tovey/Craxton and Schnabel, was very helpful for fingering, especially in the late works. I will continue to use this edition in conjunction with earlier editions.

Not nearly as good as it should be
I would have given this edition 4 or 5 stars if it were not for the binding. Before I bought it, I had read other reviews, and thought that they must be exaggerating. They were not exaggerating: not only will the books not stay open, they won't even open flat, which makes it difficult to read the notes within a couple of inches of the inner margin of each page. That said, it does have some very useful features: serious commentary, and CD's demonstrating the same music played on a fortepiano vs a piano. It's a good study score, but not a performance score, because of the binding. It was an expensive set, and for the price, it seems to me they could have bound it better (I have their old Tovey edition, and its binding is lovely).

A Very Valuable Edition
I grew up with the ABRSM Tovey edition, as recommended to me by my teacher. It was an expensive investment and remains an excellent resource. ABRSM Cooper is now an edition of choice. Highly recommended.

Great Editions ~ Not So Durable Though
This edition of Beethoven Piano Sonatas edited by Barry Cooper are great. The engraving, fingerings, performance suggestions, etc are all great. But what I am a little dissapointed about is how they can get ruined easily. The covering is quite thin and has a sort of plastic film that has started to fray on mine. These would be perfect if they were cloth-bound/hard-covered! Also they dont stay open on upright pianos. They do on grand pianos, but not everyone has one!
