436 Bach Chorales Edited Dr Cory Hall
Having possessed the complete Bach Chorales in the time-hallowed Riemenschneider edition since I was a Music undergraduate at Oxford some 60 years ago, I was very glad to discover and purchase the large practical Urtext edition compiled, edited and formatted for keyboard by Dr Cory Hall. The larger format makes the chorales far easier to read and play, while the alphabetical order is a welcome time-saver when one is searching for individual chorales. Furthermore, Dr Hall provides 436 items as opposed to Riemenschneider’s 371, though some are transpositions, useful when playing an organ chorale prelude in the same key. The inclusion of BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis) numbers is another welcome improvement on Riemenschneider. The formatting also guarantees the avoidance of page turns. My ageing eyesight would in places benefit from even larger print but that is a tiny personal quibble. I strongly recommend the publication to all musicians wishing to study, play and enjoy the greatest body of chorale harmonisations produced by the greatest of Lutheran composers.
