Wishing On a Star, a cover of Rose Royce’s 1978 hit, has gone straight to number one in the singles chart and has been recorded by the X Factor finalists and past contestants One Direction and JLS.
Every year the finalists of the X Factor record a charity single and perform the track live on the show. This is the first time they were joined by past contestants and their recent performance saw a return to the stage from old faces including Craig Colton, The Risk, Kitty and Johnny Robinson.
Profits from sales of the track will this year go to the charity Together For Short Lives.
And while the finalists celebrate their chart success, former runner-up Olly Murs had his own celebrating to do.
The singer reached number one in the UK album chart with his second album In Case You Didn’t Know.
Murs was beaten at the last hurdle by Joe McElderry back in 2009, but has gone on to have huge success. Over the past week, more than 148,000 copies of his album have been sold, knocking Rihanna’s Talk That Talk off the top spot.
It is the first number one album for Murs, whose debut album was kept off the number one spot by Take That in 2010, although he has reached the top of the charts with singles Please Don’t Go and Heart Skips a Beat.
Up All Night, the debut album by One Direction, is at number four in the album chart this week, while judge Kelly Rowland, who performed a medley of hits on the X Factor Results show last night (December 4th), is at number nine in the single’s chart with Down For Whatever.
The show also saw Misha B leave the show at the semi-final stage.
