The ukulele is back and bigger than ever!
No longer viewed (wrongly) as a child’s toy or some silly comedy gimmick, ukes have comeback to conquer the world of music, taking pride of place in the songs of a diverse array of artists from Paul McCartney and Mumford & Sons to Sigur Rós and Eddie Vedder.
You can even now buy ukulele songbooks for Adele, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, AC/DC and Black Sabbath!
The internet has been one of the major driving forces behind the resurrection of this traditional Hawaiian string instrument, with previously scattered circles of niche enthusiasts united into popular Ukuholic forums and social network groups which have grown, spread and exploded into a vast online community.
YouTube has proved to be the perfect arena for both budding ukulelists and master practitioners.
In 2006, Hawaiian uke artist, Jake Shimabukuro, rose to global fame with his cover of George Harrison’s My Guitar Gently Weeps. Having since clocked up over ten million hits, Shimabukuro’s video has been entered into the Viral Hall of Fame.
With the ukulele revival in full flight, there has never a better opportunity to grab your own and take part in this four-string mini musical renaissance, which is why we’ve teamed up with Music News to offer one lucky winner the chance to win a ukulele!
