Welsh Proms now in 25th year

Classical music fans in Wales are preparing to be dazzled and amazed as the Welsh Proms celebrates its landmark 25 year Anniversary later this month (July 17th).
Visitors to the event will be able to enjoy a total of eight orchestral concerts from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra.
Since its inception in 1986, the Welsh Proms Cardiff has become one of the city’s greatest success stories, known for its lively mix of performances to engage audiences of every age, it draws around 20,000 people to the Welsh capital to witness a host of varied and exciting performances.
Councillor Nigel Howells, the executive member for sport leisure and culture at Cardiff Council, revealed that the primary theme for this year’s event was celebration.
“St David’s Hall has gone all out to offer a truly exciting programme this year… and I hope that everyone will join us to celebrate this wonderful milestone in the Welsh cultural calendar. Be a part of it!”
The man behind the event, Owain Arwel Hughes, said that the overall aim was to entice new people to experience the music. “Our aim is to reach out to new audiences… We want to give more opportunities for people to take part.”
Mr Hughes also said that the support the Welsh Proms had received over the years from various audiences and sponsors had allowed him to be more ambitious and adventurous with the programme. “We’ve commissioned 15 works by Welsh composers and we’ve also given well over 40 performances of big works by Welsh composers as well as the first performances in Wales of lots of pieces, like Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand.”
