The musicroom viral video round up

A new feature for the musicroom blog; each week I’ll be seeing what music-related videos have been uploaded to YouTube and other video channels, and posting my favourites here for you to enjoy!
This week we’ve got music therapy, Dire Straits, Adele, some Hall & Oates, and The Simpsons.
We kick off with one of the most amazing examples of music therapy I’ve seen in a while. This video introduces Yvonne Russel, a recreation therapist at Cobble Hill Health Centre in Brooklyn, where Henry Dryer (aged 92) has been a resident for around 10 years. Normally unresponsive and depressed, Henry suddenly comes to life when given an MP3 player of his favourite music. Even when the music is turned off, for several minutes after he is responsive and uplifted, answering questions and able to organise his thoughts more clearly.

Next up is Fitri Cerado, who at aged 8 not only has an impressive voice, but can play keyboard at the same time. YouTube is filled with people covering Adele‘s Someone Like You, but this one stands out amongst the crowd.

Dire Straits probably didn’t envision their hit Sultans of Swing being performed on Ukulele, but YouTuber kyegratton has done just that. Clearly a talented musician, his rendition of the classic solo on this diminutive Uke is spot on!

A weekly roundup of viral videos simply wouldn’t be complete without at least one a capella. Although originally put up on YouTube in late January, Nick McKaig‘s version of The Simpsons Theme was recently used for the credits of the latest series!

Last up is San Francisco group Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, with a cover of the Hall and Oates classic I Can’t Go For That. It’s a great performance made even better by the fact that they’re in their minivan driving along, sensibly tasking the lead vocalist with the driving duties.
