Tricity takes the stage at Musicroom Edinburgh

Rae Macintosh Musicroom was thrilled to welcome back Tricity Vogue, our Fringe Festival friend to the store this weekend. In town for her Ukulele Cabaret (9.30pm, Venue 170 – Laughing Horse @ The Counting House), she will also be running a series of Saturday afternoon Uke Workshops at Musicroom Edinburgh, the first of which took place this weekend.
It may have been one of the only sunny days of the Summer, but the shop was still full to bursting with people looking to learn a new skill and brush up on their technique in our Ukulele Choir. We had ukes available for all in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours, and after a quick lesson on how to use an electronic tuner the players were ready to learn their first chord. C was the place to start as it only involves one finger and unbelievably within half an hour we were strumming and singing You Are My Sunshine with gusto.
Groups included children and adults, novices and experts and Rae, the Rae Mac’s Musicroom Manager, was thrilled to discover that one of the young ladies participating was also called Rae. The discovery was made during a break in proceedings when participants were given the chance to decorate their ukuleles with stickers, sequins, pens and paints while making new friends. Tricity also took the opportunity for a bit of one on one work and chatted about all things ukelele with her class.
After the break we were all treated to a performance by Tricity, who played one of her own songs, Squint Eyed Squid. The song had quite the Fringe pedigree as it turned out that Squid is a troublesome cat that Tricity shared lodgings with at the Festival last year. In the lyrics we were regaled with tales of mischief from a feline flatmate who could hang upside down in a wardrobe but would never look you in the eye.
Using such anecdotes and observations, Tricity writes a new song every day for her Cabaret show. During the session she admitted that she had to concoct a ditty about goats that afternoon at the behest of her Uke Cabaret audience from the previous night.
To finish up the Workshop we learned two new songs that used a slightly more complex set of chords before being sent out into the sunshine singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight. We still can’t get it out of our heads…”a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh, a wimoweh…”
Tricity will be back in store at 1pm this coming Saturday and every Saturday in August. Her uke workshop is free and you can bring your own ukulele or borrow one of ours. If you’d like to decorate and keep the uke you borrow you can do so for the great price of £16 (usually £24.99)!  We are also offering a 15% discount on all uke related products for participants.
