The Elgar £20 note no longer legal tender

Twenty pound notes featuring Sir Edward Elgar are no longer legal tender, as of today. All notes will need to be exchanged at the bank for the (already in circulation) version featuring Adam Smith, the 18th century economist.

Edward Elgar first appeared on the English twenty pound note in 1999 and is best known for compositions such as the Variations On A Theme Enigma and the Pomp and Circumstances Marches, but also superb works such as The Dream Of Gerontius, Chanson De Nuit and Salut D’Amour.
Of these pieces, the Enigma Variations have always held a certain fascination for many players and composers. Each variation is titled with the initials of a close friend or family member, and tells a musical story of his relationship with them.
