Susan Boyle celebrates record-breaking chart success

Susan Boyle has followed up her hit debut album with yet more record-Susan Boyle: The Giftbreaking  success with the second.
The 49-year-old Scottish singer entered the history books yesterday by becoming the first solo artist to simultaneously hold the US and UK number one album spots twice in less than 12 months.
Boyle joins The Monkees and The Beatles as the only other two acts to have achieved the same feat, in 1967 and in 1969 respectively.
The singer secured her second transatlantic double yesterday with her latest album, The Gift, which has gone to the top spot in the US in its first week and topped the UK charts on Sunday.
“I’ve never felt happier in all my life,” she said last night. “This is an amazing result and one I never expected.”
Boyle was catapulted from obscurity to global stardom after appearing on last year’s Susan Boyle: I Dreamed A DreamBritain’s Got Talent reality TV contest.
She became an instant international star after her performance of I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables wowed both the audience and judges on the show.
Commenting on the recent success, Steve Barnett, from Columbia Records, said, “The overwhelming positive response to Susan’s new album is a powerful testament to her unique talent.
“She is able to touch the hearts of her fans around the world, who continue to show their loyal support and devotion.”
In 2009, I Dreamed a Dream became the fastest-selling debut album in the history of the charts and – with more than 10 million copies sold – the biggest-selling album in the world in the last year.
Back in 1967, The Monkees saw their self-titled debut album followed up by More of the Monkees manage the feat, while in 1969, The Beatles’ White Album and Abbey Road also achieved duel success on both sides of the Atlantic.
