Pop singer Duffy, famed for hits including Mercy and Warwick Avenue, has been honoured by Bangor University.The leading Welsh educational institution has awarded the artist with an Honorary Fellowship for services to music.
Duffy was introduced to the ceremony attendees by Dr Llion Jones and received her award after becoming the first Welsh female to top the UK music charts in 25 years.
It adds to an already-impressive haul of accolades for the star, who was raised in Nefyn, Gwynedd, as her debut album Rockferry picked up a Grammy Award.
The album also earned the performer three Brit Awards including Best British Female, Best British Album and Best Breakthrough Act.
Accepting the fellowship, the singer said it was a great honour to recognised in the way and that she was “delighted to back in north Wales”.
University Registrar, Dr David Roberts, commented: “Bangor University has a strong tradition of recognising, with the award of Honorary Fellowships, the achievements of various men and women in different walks of life.
“This year is no exception. Our Fellows will add great distinction and glamour to the ceremonies at which we also recognise the achievements of our students.”
The ceremony will also see respected conductor Rhys Jones, MBE, awarded an Honorary Fellowship for services to music and the community.
Jones is described by the university as a renowned teacher who has also carved out a solid reputation as a conductor, accompanist, compere and broadcaster.
“He has founded and led many a choir and party, in particular Cantorion Gwalia, famed through Wales from the 1950s to the 1990s,” the university added.
“This is the first time that we will be awarding an Honorary Fellowships to a father and daughter, as his daughter, Caryl Parry Jones, is already an Honorary Fellow of Bangor University.”
