Salisbury Plain Military Wives Choir sing on Diamond Jubilee record

In the run up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the women of the Salisbury Plain Military Wives Choir have been lending their vocal talents to the special jubilee song, Sing, written by Gary Barlow.
Choir members Becca George, Juliet Taylor Maurice, Kate Mason, Lisa Bedward, Sharon Cox and Heidi Cox were invited down to the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London to record their contributions to the Jubilee record.
To prepare for the sessions, the choir rehearsed with Garth Malone, choir master of the original chart-topping Military Wives Choir as featured on BBC One’s The Choir.
While details on the song itself are under wraps, Becca George spoke to The Salisbury Journal about their experience in the studio.
Mrs. George, one of the choristers to appear on the song, said, “It was amazing. Gary Barlow was there helping with the recording and he made sure it fitted with the fest of what he had planned.
“It was such an honour and the pressure was on because I felt like I had to perform really well not just for me but the rest of the choir.”
A member of the Salisbury Plain Military Wives Choir from its inception in late 2011, Mrs. George had only recently moved to the area when she joined the group. She said “It was good timing for me because I had only just moved and I was looking for a choir. I would have expected this in a million years. It’s very strange to go from being a wife sitting at home to recording a single.”
The choir have also been busy rehearsing for a special live performance of song which is set to take place during the Jubilee concert on June 4 outside Buckingham Palace.
With the gig set to feature some of the biggest names in pop, including Elton John, Jessie J, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, the women of the Salisbury Plain choir can’t wait to get on-stage.
“We’re very, very excited about it, we can’t wait. We’ve lots of rehearsals coming up before and it’s going to be amazing to be able to hear everybody in the crowd singing with us so everybody is involved.”
The single will be released on May 28 with a documentary scheduled to be aired during the jubilee celebrations covering the recording process.
