As preparations for the royal wedding continue, it has been announced that The Band of the Welsh Guards is to provide music for the couple’s big day.
The band will perform a series of classic anthems as Prince William and Kate Middleton are driven in an open carriage along The Mall after the Westminster Abbey ceremony on April 29th.
Royal officials say two choirs, an orchestra and a fanfare team from the Royal Air Force band will also provide music for the wedding.
According to the Associated Press, the couple “have taken a great deal of interest and care in choosing the music for their service,” which will include well-known hymns and choral works as well as pieces commissioned especially for the occasion.
Meanwhile, the public can get a taste of The Band of the Welsh Guard’s talent from their album, A Royal Tribute, which showcases the set list and is set to be released before the big day (April 4th) by Warner Music.
It includes a recital by Hollywood actor and Welshman Michael Sheen and performances from the Choir of Westminster Abbey, the Treorchy Male Voice Choir, Aled Jones and soprano Gwawr Edwards.
Album tracks include God Save The Queen, Land Of Hope And Glory, Land Of My Fathers, Harlech, Pomp And Circumstance and the Royal Salute, with it combining the themes of royalty and Welsh heritage.
Sheen said: “The Band of the Welsh Guards are a very loved and revered group and to be invited to work with them is wonderful and I’m in great company on this record.”
The Band of the Welsh Guards was formed in 1915 and is currently formed of 49 musicians. It is entrenched in royal tradition with the Queen being the regiment’s Colonel in Chief.
