Musicians from the UK and around the British Commonwealth have been invited to take part in the prestigious 2011 Royal Over-Seas (ROSL) competition.
With more than £60,000 available in prize money and the opportunity to perform at some of the UK’s major venues and festivals, the contest is open to solo instrumentalists, singers and chamber ensembles.
Four solo awards of £5,000 are up for grabs, one for each category of wind/percussion, strings, keyboard and singers. Added to this, two chamber ensemble accolades of £10,000 each are available and will be presented to ensembles which fulfil the following combinations: Strings, strings and piano, piano duo and wind/percussion/vocal/mixed.
Competitors will be judged by a collection of previous ROSL winners from a panel chaired by Gavin Henderson, the principal of the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Potential applicants should be aware that the closing date for entry falls on January 14th, with the necessary forms found on the organisation’s website. It is also noted that groups must comprise 50 per cent or more UK or Commonwealth citizens and all members must be aged 30 or under.
Auditions will be held in February and March at the Princess Alexandra Hall, while the final concert will take place at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, on May 17th.
The ROSL offers many performance opportunities to the competition winners at major venues and festivals around the UK.
Internationally during the past two years ROSL has organised concerts and tours for prize winners in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe.
Devoted to the career development of talented young professional artists and musicians from the UK and the Commonwealth, the ROSL also presents readings and literary events in London.
In addition to the music competition, the body aims to support artists by offering scholarships in music and visual arts. ROSL also provides performance and exhibition opportunities for artists and musicians early in their careers.
