Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood has proved that he’s more than just a talented musician, after being named the music radio personality of the year at the Sony radio awards. 
Wood was honoured ahead of nominees including BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles as well as Jarvis Cocker, Frank Skinner and Scott Mills.
“It feels absolutely marvellous (winning the award). I have no idea why people have taken to me. I was a fan of (Bob Dylan’s radio show) Dreams Schemes And Themes. He always had a theme and I thought if I could come up halfway as good as Bob it’d be great.
“I knew I could play great sounds. I thought if I was a DJ who played guitar and illustrated that, it would be very educational for the kids and I would enjoy it.”
The weekly show, for Absolute Classic Rock, is just one of the creative ventures that Wood has embarked on since touring with the Stanes took a back seat.
Painting and a new album have also occupied his time.
Speaking to the Guardian in a recent interview, Wood highlighted his happiness about how the new solo album, I Feel Like Playing, sounds. Over the decades he has released seven albums and written many songs.
“Even Rod came down to some of the sessions in LA and said, ‘Ron, you are now crowned a proper vocalist.’ He said, ‘I can’t believe your improvement’.”
And Bobby Womack told him: ‘Ronnie, you’re choosing the keys for your songs, you’re experimenting’ – cos I used to be like a bull in a china shop, I’ve got an idea and I’m going to sing it!”
As a musician, Wood can boast one of the most impressive back catalogues in the industry having played bass in the Jeff Beck group, guitar in the Faces and the Stones, jammed with Hendrix and collaborated with artists including Dylan, Bowie, Prince, Clapton and Aretha Franklin.
