The rousing sound of a brass fanfare will fill Westminster Abbey at the royal wedding, thanks to a team of trumpeters from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force (RAF).
A newly-composed piece of music will be performed by the eight-strong team at Westminster Abbey on April 29th. Called Valiant and Brave, the piece was written by RAF Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs.
The title takes its name from the motto used by the squadron in which Prince William serves as a search and rescue pilot. Mr Stubbs, RAF Music Services principal director of music, said he drew musical inspiration from the RAF.
He told the BBC: “The nice thing about a fanfare is that it is prescript in many ways, it does serve a purpose – it is a functional piece of music.
“Part of it alludes to the RAF corps so that forms a basis of some of the material. Basically I have taken examples of fanfares that we know and recognise and just added my own thoughts and ideas into that.”
The Central Band is regarded to be one of the leading UK military bands, undertaking more than 370 engagements a year and travelling a distance of more than 64,000 miles. The band has represented the Royal Air Force at every major military event and performed at all of the leading concert venues in Britain.
Royal Air Force Music Services consists three main bands which each have their own ensembles of various sizes. This includes the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, the Band of The Royal Air Force College as well as the Central Band of the Royal Air force.
