PRS for Music names Manchester as best live music scene

Famous for producing bands such as Oasis, The Stone Roses and The Smiths, Manchester has finally been given the recognition it deserves in a recent PRS for Music poll.
The organisation has revealed that residents of the city are the happiest in the UK when it comes to their local music scene, with plenty of live performances and a range of music venues catering for a variety of acts and audiences.
With a proud musical heritage stretching back to the earliest days of British rock n roll, residents of Manchester have much to be proud of any many appear to be content with the current scene.
According to the organisation, which represents 75,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in the UK, Newcastle, Nottingham, Lancashire and London make up the top five. Derbyshire was bottom of the list, behind Somerset, Yorkshire, Kent and Essex.
The poll of 3,000 people found that 77.4 per cent of Mancunians thought their city had enough live music, only 0.3 per cent more than the number of Geordies happy with what was on offer in Newcastle.
On average, 52 per cent of people said there were enough gigs in their area.
Barney Hooper, spokesperson at PRS for Music said: “Local live music gigs are a great way to bring communities together and for people to discover local talent. Manchester has always been a hot contender as music capital of the UK, but we also thoroughly encourage venues in the surrounding areas, such as Derbyshire, to seek local talent and host more live gigs.”
A host of top acts are set to descend on the locality later this year, with Arcade Fire, Blink 182, Iron Maiden, Rihanna and Roger Waters all due to perform.
