PJ Harvey's album sales rise 'six-fold'

PJ Harvey’s award-winning album Let England Shake has seen a six-fold increase in sales since her Mercury Music Prize win this week.
The singer-songwriter won the prestigious award on Tuesday (September 6th) and since then her album looks to be heading back into the Top 75 in the UK album charts, Music Week reports.
Midweek figures from the Official Charts Company shows that the album was at 181 in the chart last Sunday and is now 29th, increasing week-on-week sales by 658.5 per cent already.
Yesterday, 3,335 copies had been sold so far this week, although that number is expected to be higher today. Before this week, nearly 75,000 had been sold.
According to the news provider, more copies have been sold in these two days than in any full week since the album was released back in February.
Then, what is her eighth studio album, peaked at number eight in the charts.
Explaining the soaring record sales, Paul Firth, head of music buying at Amazon told NME.com: “The Mercury Prize is an important award for any artist, new or established, and always has an immediate effect on sales. It will be interesting to see whether PJ Harvey will surpass Adele at the very top of the charts over the coming days.”
The accolade, which saw PJ beat the likes of Adele, Elbow and Katy B, is the second win for the guitarist, making her the only artist to have been awarded the prize twice.
She won the prize back in 2001 for her album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, but was unable to pick up the award because she was grounded in New York after the September 11th attacks.
On picking up her award, she said: “This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last.”
The album features the autoharp and addresses issues of warfare.
