Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony-winning adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera opened in the West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It became the longest-running musical in Broadway history after overtaking Cats in 2006. The musical is also running in Las Vegas, London, Budapest and South Africa.
Since its debut in London in 1986 it has become synonymous worldwide with musical theatre and has spawned its own 2004 film adaptation by Joel Schumacher, which starred Gerard Butler as the Phantom.
