Nirvana strong contenders for Christmas Number One

Nirvana are second favourites to win the race for Christmas Number One this year after a flurry of bets have been placed in the past week.
A Facebook campaign was launched earlier this year to get Smells Like Teen Spirit to the number one spot and keep the X Factor winner from reaching the top of the charts.
Similar campaigns have been run in previous years in response to the dominance of X Factor contestants in the festive chart. Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name was the first track to keep 2009 winner Joe McElderry off the top spot with his song The Climb.
This year, as Nirvana marks 20 years of their album Nevermind, the seminal hit could re-enter the charts. According to William Hill, the track is currently placed at 5/1 after the X Factor winner.
Also in the running are The Wombles with their song Wombling Merry Christmas. The Daily Telegraph reported, however, that a rush of betting on the children’s animals to top the charts has seen their odds fall from 50/1 to 7/1.
The cast of The Only Way is Essex, who have recorded a cover of George Michael’s Last Christmas, are also placed at 7/1 to reach number one, as is Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber’s collaboration on All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Amy Winehouse could also re-enter the charts next month, along with Adele, Pixie Lott and One Direction.
Proceeds from The Only Way Is Essex song, which features The Only Way Is Up for the B-side, will go to a new charity set up by ITV to help a number of causes.
Meanwhile, since re-entering the show at the weekend, X Factor contestant Amelia Lilly is already a bookie’s favourite, with odd of 3/1 to win, while Marcus Collins leads.
