National music competition launched by MP

A new national music competition that aims to find upcoming artists, bands and venues around the country has been officially launched by a parliamentary minister.
Mike Weatherley, who represents Hove and Portslade, has announced that the Rock The House contest is now open for entries.
Rock The House is a new parliamentary-backed project, in partnership with leading music industry practitioners, which hopes to encourage young people and new musicians to pursue a career in music and promote live music venues.
In addition, it will raise awareness of the need for copyright Mike Weatherleyprotection measures for artists as well as making MPs and the general public aware of the importance of musicians’ rights within the creative industries.
Meanwhile, other backers of the for the competition include EMI, Consumer Focus, Music Managers Forum, the Incorporated Society of Musicians and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Music.
“Issues around copyright and protecting the intellectual property of artists are not part of traditional parliamentary business and my hope in developing Rock The House is to put the spotlight on some very important issues within the music industry and increase political support for protecting artists’ work,” said Mr Weatherley.
To participate, musicians are encouraged to get in touch with their local MP with examples of their work. Entries will then be put in front of a judging panel before the closing date at the end of March.
The winners will then be revealed at the end of May.
According to the Rock The House website, all finalists will be invited to an exclusive event on the Terrace of the House of Commons in June.
Here, a number of other top prizes will also be handed out, such as a variety of gear and instruments from Yamaha, classes with top industry consultants, media coverage and more.
