NAMM calls for National Music Store celebration

Not so long ago figures were released that revealed that the independent retail sector was the only section in the recorded music industry that saw an increase in profits in 2010.
Demand for CDs, vinyl, cassettes and other physical music products, it appears, is alive and well. Now US trade body NAMM has announced that May 6th will mark the start of its National Music Store Weekend.
While currently a US-based event, industry publication Mi-Pro is keen for a similar celebration this side of the Atlantic.
The event is designed to encourage existing and aspiring musicians to visit their local music stores and experience the enjoyment and many proven benefits of playing music.
Having sponsored research into US music making habits, it has been revealed that 85 per cent of Americans who do not currently play a musical instrument wish that they did.
A trip to local music stores across the country is something which, the news provider suggests, could be the first step to getting many of these people the music training they desire.
Indeed, NAMM outlined the numerous benefits that high street retailers have.
The trade body noted that whether musicians have been playing music for years or are new players, local music stores boast expert advice from fully-trained, professional staff.
“Not only are local music stores an inspiring space for aspiring music makers, they are also a good place to find out about local music events and concerts, performance opportunities and to talk to other people with musical interests like you,” the organisation said.
Building on this knowledge further, NAMM explained that local music stores are also a great place for musicians to go to get advice on all aspects of things relating to music and their instruments.
“Whether you’re looking for a reed for your clarinet or want to know the very best way to clean your instrument, your local music store can help,” it added.
