Musicrooms events co-ordinator Emily Parker has been working closely with The Wedgewood Room’s promoter Mark Spikey to create and organise the 10 week competition. Musicroom Portsmouth thrives to support the local music community and by working with The Wedgewood Rooms Venue we had the opportunity to highlight the local talented Musicians we have on our door step. Musicians had the opportunity to play Portsmouth’s most established music venue in front of enthusiastic audiences whom were judged by their contempories offering constructive advice to help advance them on their musical journey.
Over 30 acts performed mini sets over the 8 weekly ‘Edge of the Wedge’ heats. Each heat consisted of 4 acts that played 20 minute sets. They were judged by an assortment of Musicroom staff, promoters, producers and musicians and also the winner of last years Musicroom Acoustic Showcase Winner. Judges votes counted for 75% with audience votes counting for 25%. Some weeks the audience vote proved crucial in deciding the winner!
The eight heats were followed by two semi finals plus last Thursdays grand Final, held in the much larger and legendary Wedgewood Rooms in Albert road, Southsea.
The final 4 acts were Libbylaboo, Dirty Sky Jones, Matt O’Neil and the Days of the Rabblement. In a close final separated by only 8 points between all the acts, the mighty Rabblement won. Their spirited performance bagged them a lovely new TW15 Tanglewood electro acoustic guitar (courtesy of Tanglewood) while the runners-up won Musicroom vouchers.
A big thumbs up all round for an amazing event, special thanks to all the musicians who took part and especially to Emily and Mark for putting the whole thing together from scratch. Here’s to 2012 when we hope to run the Acoustic Showcase for a third consecutive year.
