Way Home from ask the river
British composer Rachel Portman has written over 100 scores for film, television and theatre. She was the first female composer to win an Academy Award for her original score for Emma (1996). She later received similar accolades for Cider House Rules (1999) and Chocolat (2000). Just as comfortable scoring for movies, Portman has also written concert stage music, more recently, climate change inspired opera, The Water Diviner’s Tale. From Portman’s latest album, ask the river, ‘Way Home‘ is a lyrical song scored for violin and piano, echoes the composer’s continued commitment and feelings about our fragile environment.
Mélodies
This collection by french composer Isabelle Aboulker promises beautiful melodies for any occasion: the passionate vocalises of Je t’aime sits alongside the limpid settings of poet Jean de La Fontaine, while the eeriness of the merchant of souls in Au Marché de Saint-Paul contrasts with the light humour of the Savoir-vivre cycle. Recently awarded the prestigious Grand Priz of the French Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SACEM) Isabelle’s prosodic clarity and voluptuous focus on the evocative power of words speak of a deep attachment to the legacy of French song composers.
