Is Adele's 21 better than Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon?

We’ve all heard the defensive fan riposte when their favourite act is criticised, especially when the artist is a major chart topping block-buster name.
“How can they not be good? They’ve sold seven million records!”
“Three thousand people watching the mainstage can’t be wrong!”
Or the dreaded… “How many albums have you sold, eh? Exactly!”
If you do base your judgements on record sales, then this month, Adele’s 21 became a better album than Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon.
Controversial some might say, but the singer’s second album has this month not only overtaken the 1973 prog classic in the UK’s all-time biggest selling albums chart, but has also overcome the next in-line, Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, just one week later.
This now makes it the sixth biggest-selling album of all time, pushing Pink Floyd’s seminal work down into eighth and Dire Straits’ 1985 classic into seventh place.
It was only four weeks ago that Adele surpassed Michael Jackson’s Bad in the chart and she is set to beat his album Thriller very soon if sales continue.
Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company, commented: “It has been an extraordinary 12 months or so for Adele, and it looks set to become even more extraordinary as the days and weeks go by.”
However, Adele has some way to go before 21 becomes the biggest-selling album of all time in the UK.
Queen’s Greatest Hits currently holds the top spot with 5,864,000 copies sold, followed by The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. More than 5,045,000 copies of the fab four’s psychedelic 1967 album have been sold.
Gold: Greatest Hits by Abba, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, complete the top five.
It is thought that one in six British households now owns a copy of Adele’s award-winning 21, and it still remains in the charts, currently staying afloat at number five in the UK albums chart, down from number three last week.
Who is still yet to buy 21? It is hard to believe that after 61 weeks thousands of people are still purchasing the album who didn’t own it before.
