The cast of Glee has beaten the record previously held by the Beatles 
by having the most appearances in the Billboard Hot 100 chart by a non-solo act.
As of this week, six new entries ensures that the fictional high-school choir has amassed a total of 75 top 100 singles, surpassing the previous record held by the fab four of 71. Only Elvis Presley and James Brown hold more individual US hits, with 108 and 91 respectively.
In total, the cast of Glee have shifted an impressive 2.8 million albums and 11.5 million downloads – songs from the TV show are released digitally after each episode is broadcast – according to music sales tracker Neilson SoundScan.
However, die-hard fans of the Liverpool legends will be pleased to hear that the Glee covers do not possess the longevity of the Beatles’ recordings. Only 14 Glee songs have stayed in the top 100 for more than one week and just one has made it into the top ten. In fact, the Beatles can boast a total of 617 weeks in the chart, compared to 105 for all Glee songs.
However, the news is further evidence of the influence that the TV show has had since its release and may serve as inspiration to even more individuals to take up singing.
Earlier this year, the Times Educational Supplement claimed that school choirs were growing in popularity as a result of the show, with many school children inspired to start their own clubs. Music teacher Sarah Beattie explained to the news provider that after seeing her pupils’ enthusiasm for the music from Glee, she was inspired to utilise the shows sheet music during practice. “They would burst into song after they had seen an episode and they were asking me to teach songs from the show in their lessons,” she explained.
