Nadine Coyle, the Derry-born singer from Girls Aloud, has confirmed that the girl group will reunite for a ten-year reunion in 2012.
Speaking to radio host Dean Kelly, she said: “We always discuss doing a ten-year reunion thing. So that’s going to be next year.”
She did not confirm any more details, explaining that it takes some major organisation to get the band together.
“We’re definitely going to do something,” Nadine added. “But it’s a whole huge production. Girls Aloud is not just us five, there’s like us five plus a ridiculous team of 50 who travel with us, it’s amazing.”
Girls Aloud was one of the first manufactured bands to be formed on TV. They formed in 2002 on the ITV1 show Popstars: The Rivals when viewers chose the members of the all-girl group.
On winning the show, they released their first single, Sound of the Underground, which became the Christmas number one.
However, the band has not released a single since 2009 when Untouchable from their fifth studio album Out of Control peaked at number 11 in the UK.
The break came as band member Cheryl Cole became a judge on The X Factor and Sarah Harding tried her hand at acting.
Since the break, Nicola Roberts has pursued a solo career with her first single Beat of My Drum, Kimberly Walsh has worked as a presenter, while Nadine herself has opened a run of Irish pubs in the US.
And it is not just Nadine who has claimed that Girls Aloud will reunite. The band’s manager Hilary Shaw confirmed the move.
“Everybody wants them to make a comeback and it will be next year. Well, it is their tenth anniversary so there will be something,” she remarked.
“They speak all the time, and that includes Cheryl [Cole] and Nadine [Coyle] with the other girls. Cheryl is keen to get back with the girls, and is planning something which could be a one-off or some gigs.”
