Female artists dominate MTV Video Music Awards

It was the girls who ran the world at the MTV Video Music Awards last night (August 29th), as Beyonce, Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry all took away VMA Moonmen statuettes.
Taking the most prestigious prize of the night, ‘video of the year’, was Perry with her song Firework, while Lady Gaga’s Born this Way was named ‘best female video’.
Perry also achieved two awards with Kanye West for their song E.T. The video won ‘best collaboration’ and ‘best special effects’.
Lady Gaga, who claimed she wasn’t at the awards last night, being replaced instead by her male alter ego Joe Calderone, was also awarded the ‘best video with a message’ gong for Born This Way.
Meanwhile, British starlet Adele won three awards for Rolling in the Deep, all in technical categories. She also performed Someone Like You at the show.
Other women to be recognised at the event included Nicki Minaj with Super Bass, Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls) and Britney Spears for ‘best pop video’.
Spears has made a come-back with the song Till the World Ends and was also presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, celebrating her illustrious and somewhat colourful career. A troupe of dancers paid tribute to the popstar by performing some of her most famous routines.
As had been speculated, the VMAs also held a moment for Amy Winehouse, with Tony Bennett, who was the last person to record with Amy before she died, introducing a recording session of the couple singing Body and Soul.
Bennett has already announced that he will release the duet to raise money for charity. Bruno Mars continued the tribute with a performance of Winehouse’s hit Valerie.
On a lighter note, Beyonce revealed her pregnancy at the show. On finishing her performance of Love on Top, she unbuttoned her jacket to show off her baby bump.
“I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me,” the singer gushed.
