Google’s Moog doodle has been a huge success, inspiring the Twittersphere to honour Robert Moog en masse with birthday wishes and messages of admiration for his contribution to music making and sound technology.
Today’s virtual synth doodle was based on the Minimoog, an early and iconic synth that ushered in a new era of sound creation.
David Ventura‘s excellent music resource book, Understanding Popular Music, covers these  early analogue synthesisers and their influence on modern music. You can read an exclusive extract from the book below:

Playlists of the songs analysed throughout the book can also be found in iTunes (published via Ping, search for Rhinegold Education), Spotify and YouTube.
Understanding Popular Music received a five star review from Jane Werry in this month’s Music Teacher Magazine, who hailed the book  as “the best overview of popular music styles” she had ever seen.
