Zephyr Dances by Stanley Friedman Brass Quintet - Sheet Music

By Stanley Friedman
Brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba) - Grade 3-4

SKU: ET.ENS147

Composed by Stanley Friedman. Contemporary. Composed 2001. Duration 10'53''. Editions BIM #ENS147. Published by Editions BIM (ET.ENS147).

ISBN 9790207006370.

These six short pieces were composed for my own brass chamber group, the Zephyr Quartet, which includes Ben Lewis (trumpet), Sam Compton (horn) and Greg Luscombe (trombone).

The Dances are based on different but related pitch sets, each of which is generated by the available overtones of the various valve combinations:

Tango (open-C7 + 1,2,3-F#7),
Polka (open-C7 + 1,3-G7),
Minuet (open-C7 + 2,3-Aflat7),
Balkan Two-Step
(open-C7 + 1,2-A7),
Sarabande (open-C7 + 1-B-flat7),
Hora (open-C7 + 2-B7).

These sets further are contrasted with the additional sets of excluded pitches. The results yield modes and harmonies suggestive of music from various cultures and ethnicities.

Zephyr Dances is published in both quartet and quintet versions (which differ slightly).
Stanley Friedman.

Bat-tusie or Tango
This is a set of wonderful and timeless dances from around the world. Not for the faint of heart they have some rhythmic gyrations that are better not thought about, just step into it. Remember you don't dance like you walk so don't play with two left feet. A good piece for an Advanced group, certainly a great center piece for a formal concert or to add to a playlist to get the attention of a passive audience, Hey, is that a Tango?
