By Adam Grim. Composed by Adam Grim. This edition: pdf, streaming. Chamber, Instructional. Score. 7 pages. Adam B. Grim #1136205. Published by Adam B. Grim (A0.1564124).
You When. Only You Trying. Fail Stop. is a piece for solo piano that is a cathartic ballad that is about losing a long battle. There are places where Victory is felt, but overall the feeling of losing and moving on are greater. This was not written first and then played, rather it was played first and transcribed afterwards. The example video is the only “take” that happened. All of the pauses and moments of change are happening chronologically as time moves in the room it was being performed in. The room was a classroom with nothing but chairs, stands, an empty desk, and a piano. The title comes from the last piece of artwork hanging on the wall between the desk and piano: a handmade piece of art for inspiration to the students. Three canvases with dark blue and black paint, and black lettering that reads “You only fail when you stop trying”. To read it fully, you have to get close and read across the three canvases. Without that, it reads “You when. Only you trying. Fail stop.”. After losing the battle, choosing to read the inspiration this way only made sense. To feel a this loss, was to feel victorious.
