It was written for his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, as a Valentine’s Day gift when he couldn’t afford anything else, and the song frames “home” as a person rather than a place.
It appears on Piano Man and also on later Billy Joel collections and live albums, including Songs in the Attic and 12 Gardens Live. It also served as the B-side of the “Piano Man” single
It was used to wake astronauts aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-132 in 2010.
