The project aimed not only to honor these artists but also to expand their representation in the carillon repertoire through a series of original arrangements. The series featured a wide range of genres, including blues, folk, gospel, jazz, pop, rock, soul, and Tejano, among others. Performances took place on both the Baird Carillon and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. About Aretha Franklin Aretha Louise Franklin (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018), honored as the “Queen of Soul,” was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. One of the best-selling musical artists of all time, Rolling Stone magazine twice named her the greatest singer of all time. Franklin’s work in soul—as well as R&B, gospel, jazz, and pop—earned her eighteen Grammy Awards, including eight consecutive awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, a Grammy Living Legend Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first woman ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush on November 9, 2005. Franklin’s ability to interpret both vocal and keyboard music has been praised by critics, citing her musical intelligence, powerful interpretation, and embodiment of the joy, struggle, hope, and beauty of the African American experience. Throughout her life, Franklin was involved in the fight for the rights of women, African Americans, and Indigenous peoples, often using her music and performances to support causes and as a form of protest. She passed away in 2018 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 76, with numerous musicians, entertainers and politicians worldwide paying tribute to her extraordinary life. All arrangements from Celebrating the Life, Legacy and Music of: Aretha Franklin are dedicated to carillonist, teacher, activist and scholar Tiffany Ng.
