This arrangement was inspired by necessity. Many years ago, the Middle School Band I was directing was required to march in the town's Memorial Day Parade, but the 8th graders never wanted to do it. So I asked them, "what song would you like to play"? And, back then the number one hit was "Yeah!". I also knew that I only had one shot at winning them over, so it had to be an arrangement that was good, but simple enough to learn within one rehearsal. It was written with these characteristics in mind and eventually a huge success!
1. I taught the repetitive percussion and bass line first, then
2. Added the repetitive upper voices before
3. Adding the melody in Alto Sax and Trumpets (eventually I added some clarinets and a Tenor Sax to reinforce the challenging melody).
If proper rehearsal momentum is maintained, this should be a very quick learn and a fun piece to perform and march to. The audience will like it too!
