Part two of "Almost There". (Commissioned in Honor of Gil Evans by IAJE and the Herb Alpert Foundation and premiered by soloist Tim Ries with the Fresno Jazz Composers Orchestra at the 2005 IAJE Conference in Long Beach, CA.) Begins with a Coltrane-inspired free jam between the drums and tenor soloist leading into a moody medium swing groove, and following a laid-back piano solo, morphs into a lengthy open improvisation for your tenor player and the rhythm section (works best with a 5-string electric bass--lots of low B action going on). Look out for all the quotes of jazz standards thrown in throughout the recap in tribute to the memory of the great Shaghoian. The piece wraps up with a metric modulation into the return of the material from Part one and one final ensemble quote before the delicate vibe/guitar conclusion. Woodwind doubles include 2nd alto/flute, 1st tenor/soprano, 2nd tenor/clarinet, and bari sax/bass clarinet. Guitar part is written for both acoustic and electric. The percussion part features extensive passages for vibraphone. Diff.
