Birdy’s famous hit reached number 8 in the Uk singles chart. As a cellist, and member of a quartet at school, I would have loved to play a song like this. The quartet find that this piece is one that is very popular for weddings. It is 3.30mins long, and in an easy key for strings. I think ABRSM Grade 5 and could tackle it. There is a lot of double stopping to get the really chunky sound that you can hear on the excerpt, but most of it uses open strings, so it is not very difficult but sounds great, especially in the loud bits! I focused on the chorus because I love the harmonies, and everyone gets their time in the sun in this arrangement. Digging into the quaver movement is perfect for strings, in a way that is almost Baroque, and the viola has the best bit. Make sure you can hear her!
