Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Jeff Lipscomb. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. 10 pages. Jeff Lipscomb #909633. Published by Jeff Lipscomb (A0.1321180).
This beautiful song comes from a short collection of songs that Brahms wrote relatively late in his career. He was working on his Violin Sonata No.2 at about the same time, and so it’s natural that piece also quotes from this work. The song itself is a wonderful example of late Romantic harmonic and Brahms’s own lyrical melodic writing.
This piece would be good for developing and refining tonal production and vibrato. While none of the parts goes up very high, it’s not recommended for performers to stay in first position throughout the piece. There are also opportunities to refine ensemble skills of phrasing and rubato. Cross-curricular instruction (with English and/or German) is possible with the original song via discussion on its meaning and how Brahms tried to represent that meaning within the musical form of the work.
