Jascha Heifetz's 1944 solo of White Christmas - full orchestra arrangement by Bryan Kidd; solo transcribed and edited by Peter Wilson

Jascha Heifetz's 1944 solo of White Christmas - full orchestra arrangement by Bryan Kidd; solo transcribed and edited by Peter Wilson Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” is arguably the biggest-selling single recording of all time. Bing Crosby introduced it on his Kraft Music Hall radio show on Christmas Day, 1941, just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s entry into World War II. Like Crosby and many other prominent entertainment figures, renowned classical violinist Jascha Heifetz was passionately devoted to the American forces overseas. Despite the average GI’s taste for music of a non-classical style, a Heifetz performance – sometimes from the back of a truck with an out of tune piano for accompaniment – proved to be immensely popular with the soldiers and sailors. He gave over 300 USO performances, some of which (and often the most brilliant) occurred under the most stressful, physically demanding and emotionally challenging circumstances. He recorded "White Christmas" for Decca in October 1944, collaborating with noted trumpeter and arranger, Salvador "Tutti" Camarata. Other than the Decca recording, there is no primary source material from which to derive this arrangement. Given Heifetz’s improvisational skill and enthusiasm for jazz, it is reasonable to assume he created the solo part. The violin solo was transcribed and edited by retired Marine Band White House Orchestra Concertmaster, Peter Wilson. The orchestral track was transcribed and then adapted for full orchestra by retired Untied States Navy Band Chief Composer-Arranger Bryan Kidd. Solo violin ADVANCED; full orchestra MEDIUM ADVANCED Full orchestra A letter-size (8.5x11) score and complete set of instrumental parts are included; a more easily read tabloid (11x17) score is available separately (RECOMMENDED).
