Introduction
Imagine a crackling fire under the holly dressed mantle and stockings as a light flurry begins to fall outside. Its Christmas eve and you can't help dreaming that when you wake up tomorrow everything will be covered in snow. There in the light of the fire, its the perfect time to hum along as you lightly pick out the old Christmas classic.
This arrangement uses a combination of open and barred chords to create an arpeggiated chordal melody. Most fretting hand techniques that are used are simple. The plucking hand, however, must exhibit precise finger-picking. The piece is well suited for providing soft background music or a solid accompaniment. If a different key is required, simply add a capo.
Practice
Measures 1-3 (Intro): Just a soft descending line to set the mood. Use the plucking hand thumb for the bass and the remaining fingers for the rest of the chord. Follow this technique for the rest of the arrangement.
Measures 4-35 (Verse 1): One of the most useful tips I can give is this: Find the common chord shapes. For example, measure four is a simple G chord, measure six is an Am, and measure 7 is an A major to a D. Next, be sure to emphasize the outer voices. The melody and the bass line should stand out from the arpeggio of the inner voices. Notice in the sheet music that the melody takes the upward stems while the rest face down. When you arrive at measure 35, image an upright bass.
Measures 36-67 (Verse 2): Just like verse 1, this verse utilizes common chord shapes. The greatest difference is that the melody is now in the bass. Use your thumb to play the melody and keep the upper voices light. .
