"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was written by the Beatles' lead guitarist George Harrison in 1968, after he returned from a meditation retreat in India. Since the rest of the band initially didn't like the song, he recorded a calm, acoustic version of the song, accompanied by just his guitar and a harmonium. In the following weeks, the full band recorded the version of the song which was included on their 1968 self-titled double album (also known as the "White Album"), in a much heavier rock style.
George Harrison's original recording of the song was later included on the 1996 compilation album "Anthology 3". George Martin (often called the "Fifth Beatle") added a string arrangement to this version for the "Love" soundtrack album, his final work as a producer before he passed away in 2016.
Today, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is widely considered one of the Beatles' greatest songs, a reflection of George Harrison's isolation from the other Beatles at the time, and an example of his qualities as a songwriter.
