“When Morning Gilds the Skies,” was commisioned by Larry Stich, professional musician and parishioner, for St. Bernard Parish’s Caecelian Choir on their 100th anniversary (Watertown, Wisconsin). Written in March of 1992 we believe that this is the last major composition of Sr. Theophane. She died on August 13, 1992 in the midst of a Milwaukee church music workshop. She played her “Rhapsody of Praise: Based on the Chant ‘Te Deum’” in concert a few days before her unexpected passing.

This choral composition is based on an original melody by Sr. Theophane with expanded presentations of the refrain-like text “May Jesus Christ be praised.” There is a gentle lilt to the tune, asymmetry supported by the 5/4 meter. Sopranos/altos sing the verses in dialogue with the tenors/basses. The simulated refrain alternates between SA/TB dialogue, echo, and familiar style.
