Montreal, Canada, born Oscar Peterson CC CQ OOnt, is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He released over 200 recordings, won 8 Grammy Awards, and received many other awards and recognitions.
Building on his impressive achievements, Peterson performed thousands of concerts worldwide for more than 6 decades. Duke Ellington called him the "Maharaja (King) of the Keyboard."
Reflecting on his long career, Peterson once said, "As a musician, I respond to the harmony and rhythm of life, and when I'm deeply moved, it leaves something singing inside me."
This passion and connection to music inspired Peterson's vision for his Canadiana Suite studio album, recorded on 9 September 1964 in New York, which was to pay tribute to Canada's diverse landscape, having travelled across it by train.
Among the tracks, Wheatland is the 6th and is representative of Saskatchewan - the breadbasket of Canada. It is a rhythmic piece with blues-tinges that captures the pastoral beauty, the swaying of the wheat fields, and the energy of gathering the grain.
