This beloved song can move the mind toward the heart. My church loves this hymn especially during our Communion Services. The beautiful tune is introduced in overlapping fragments, then is exposed in its single-note entirety using optional special-effects pedaling (see performance notes on the score). The melody gradually thickens with satisfying harmonies that suspend, move in inner voices and broaden to a joyous resolution. A simple statement of the melody then brings the dynamic back down to an oh-so-right final suspension that reminds us that in eternity we will, as the song says, "sing on!"
