Originally released in 1967 and performed by Louis Armstrong, this now very well-known tune has since been covered by numerous artists and used in many movies and other media. Rereleased in 1988, it has gone on to achieve multiplatinum status in several countries and earned a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
Its structure has a very interesting (almost jazz like) harmonic progression beneath the lilting melody, as it moves in a mostly logical and diatonic manner, then presents the occasional surprise through chords which contrast powerfully against its key signature.
This arrangement for solo piano you will find immensely fun to play and quick to learn, due to its consistent style and adherence to the original melody. It also makes a great study piece, or an intermediate to advanced sight reading exercise for grading.
